Boy who wandered from home in 2000 possibly found in Illinois.
The dirty little blond boy brought into an Evanston hospital in early February went by the name Eli Quick. But investigators in rural North Carolina who have spent more than two years searching for a troubled, blue-eyed child think he might go by another name: “Buddy.”
“His cheeks, his ears, his eyes,” said Sgt. Darold Cox, the lead investigator on the case for the Sampson County sheriff’s office in Clinton, N.C. “The little boy has scars on him, a speech impediment.”
It all matches, he said.
Still, it may take weeks for DNA tests to confirm whether the boy in the custody of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is Tristen “Buddy” Myers, who wandered away from his North Carolina home on Oct. 5, 2000.
Late Tuesday, FBI agents were questioning a man who claimed to be Eli’s father when he brought the boy to St. Francis Hospital on Feb. 3, according to FBI spokesman Ross Rice.
As authorities try to match details of the lives of Buddy, who would now be 6, and Eli, one thing is certain: The boy now in Chicago has led a childhood marked by frequent moves, neglect and tragedy.
